Ok, maybe I'm going a bit over paranoid around here, but I'm trying to check all possibilities. I've already tested various kinds of software keyloggers, and already have put up defenses in my laptop against them.
However, I'm still thinking about the hardware part. Is there a way to install a hardware-based keylogger in a laptop? I don't use a docking station, only the laptop keyboard. Could there be a way to somehow install a keylogger inside the laptop? Or can I safely discard it on the "Not Possible" category?

Definately possibly. Theoretically anyways. (A physical logger would easily be discovered, of course.)
No matter how over the top the idea is, nobody can garantee you that your computer's BIOS firmware isn't set-up to snoop on you. (This wouldn't affect just laptops either btw). Through some special, undocumented instruction, a user-land program, or virus, can access the logged keys and send them to another party.
But I guess the BIOS vendors would only do that in a true Orwellian society, so not just yet.
There's plenty software based keyloggers as well, so you never can be too paranoid.
